Indigenous Peoples are one of the fastest growing populations in Canada. Due to increased economic activity, business development and growth/expansion in Indigenous communities, a basic level of knowledge about Indigenous Peoples in Canada is viewed as an asset by many employers and is fast becoming a desirable skill set for job seekers and new professionals.
Understand Issues Facing Canada's Indigenous Population
We welcome individuals who are seeking professional or personal development to gain a better understanding of the issues facing Canada's Indigenous population today and how to effectively build relationships with Indigenous communities and Indigenous community members.
The Program
The Indigenous Relations Training Program is sponsored in part by the ATCO Group, and offers 24 hours of Indigenous Relations training. The following interactive modules are three hours each and include the following topics:
- Indigenous Ways of Knowing
- Historical Overview of Indigenous People in Canada
- History and Contemporary Trends of the Métis Settlements in Alberta
- Current Trends in Education and Employment
- Socio-Cultural Issues in the Northern and Circumpolar Region
- Economic Development & Environmental Issues in the Northern & Circumpolar Region
- Resource Development in Indigenous Communities
- Building Strong Community Relations
Career Development
Participants who complete all 8 modules of the Indigenous Relations Training Program will receive a Participatory Certificate, verifying that the participant has completed 24 hours of non-credit Professional Development.
Attendance to all modules is required in order to recieve the certificate for the program.

Course Schedule:
The program is offered similar to a block week format. The eight three-hour modules are presented virtually over four days. The program typically runs from 9 am to 4 pm daily, with an hour break for lunch each day. There may be slight variations as scheduling is confirmed.
External Registrants who complete all eight modules of the Indigenous Relations Training Program will receive a Participatory Parchment, verifying that the participant has completed 24 hours of non-credit professional development.
Attendance to all modules is required in order to receive the Participatory Parchment.
Cancellation Policy:
Cancellations made more than 14 days prior to program start date will be issued a refund less a $50 administration fee. Cancellations made within 14 days of program start date will not result in a refund. However, your registration may be transferred to a future course offering. Please note that only one registration transfer is possible.

Co-Curricular Credit:
This program, managed in partnership by UCalgary's Writing Symbols Lodge and Career Services, is recognized on the University of Calgary's Co-Curricular Record (CCR). The CCR documents formally recognizes student leadership, development, and volunteerism. A student's CCR can act as a transcript that students can be add to an application for a job, a grant, or future studies.
